The Cupid's bow is the M-shaped curve where the center of the upper lip rises slightly — a lip line as crisp as a drawn bowstring. It's an effective procedure for those whose lip line is uneven or flat and who want a more defined lip shape. Because Dr.Tak's Scarless Cupid's Bow designs and excises precisely on the inner mucosa of the lip, the incision stays hidden inside the mouth while the lip line becomes crisply defined.
What it is — a lip reduction that draws a defined wave
This is surgery, not an injection. It is in fact a type of lip reduction: rather than simply making the lips smaller, we design an M-shaped, wave-like pattern on the inner mucosa of the lip, excise exactly that much, and close it. As tissue is removed the outline of the red lip is tidied, so a flat mouth reads as a crisp, three-dimensional curve.
- Upper lip — the M shape: a clearly raised centre, like a drawn bowstring.
- Lower lip — the double curve: two gentle swells that make the lower lip look defined and soft at once.
Designing the upper and lower lip together gives the most balanced result. Which part to refine, and by how much, is planned around the lip you already have and the look you want. In the literature this excision pattern is known as the "bikini" lip reduction; you may also see it called M-shaped lip surgery.
Note that this is not a gull-wing lip lift, a Cupid's bowplasty, or a vermilion advancement — all of those cut the outer skin above the lip border. We do not.
Lip Reduction vs. Cupid's Bow Lip Shaping — which one do you need?
Both are scarless procedures: the incision goes inside the mouth, so nothing shows on the outside. What differs is their purpose.
| Scarless Lip Reduction | Cupid's Bow Lip Shaping | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Volume — makes thick lips thinner | Shape — makes a flat lip line defined |
| Your concern | "My lips are thick and heavy." | "My lips are flat, with no clear line." |
| Result | A tidier, lighter mouth | A three-dimensional mouth with a crisp M-shaped peak |
If the thickness is what bothers you, that's lip reduction. If the thickness is fine but the line is faint, that's Cupid's bow lip shaping. Many people need both — reducing volume while shaping the line at the same time means one surgery and one recovery. We work out which you need together, at your consultation.

The key to Cupid's bow surgery: keeping it natural
The Cupid's bow is an area where even a tiny change makes a big difference in impression. Dr.Tak Plastic Surgery holds "preventing overcorrection" as a core value. We create a natural curve in the upper-lip line for a more attractive mouth while thoroughly avoiding any unnatural result. By preserving the lip's natural shape, we complete lips that are both distinctive and beautiful.
Recommended for
• Those whose lip line is uneven or flat and who want a more defined shape
• Those whose lips look flat and featureless with no clear line
• Those who want a defined mouth even without makeup
• Those whose upper-lip peak (M-line) is faint
• Those who want to tidy the edge line of the lips
• Those who want to add definition while keeping a natural curve
• Those who want the lower lip refined into a defined double curve as well
• Those whose lip line has grown faint with age
• Those whose lip line (the peaks) has been blurred by filler and the like (in this case filler and foreign-body removal may be worth considering first)
Surgical method — the scarless system
The incision is made on the inner mucosa of the lip. The outer skin is left untouched. We excise only as much as the design calls for, following the intended M-shaped, wave-like curve, then refine the line with micro-sutures. As tissue is removed the outline of the red lip is tidied, so the peaks read clearly. Because the incision is hidden inside the lip, it is not visible from the outside — this is why we call it scarless.
The key is "not overdoing it" — too much definition looks unnatural, while too little has minimal effect. Through 1:1 detailed consultation, Dr.Tak designs the most harmonious curve to suit each patient's face shape and desired image.
What sets Dr.Tak apart
Rather than a uniform standard of "pretty lips," we comprehensively analyze each patient's face shape, features, and desired image to design the most natural and harmonious Cupid's bow. Every procedure is grounded in considering individual facial characteristics, pursuing natural results, and valuing aftercare. Through the meticulous, refined technique of medical staff who precisely understand lip anatomy, we deliver satisfying results.
Recovery after surgery
Major swelling subsides within 5–7 days, and sutures are removed after 7 days. Because the incision sits on the inner mucosa of the lip, suture marks are not visible from the outside.
An honest word on what to expect — and what we can't do
This is an area where a millimetre changes the whole impression, so the balance between "defined" and "natural" matters more than anything. Pushing the definition too far can end up looking artificial, which is why Dr.Tak deliberately holds back from overcorrection. It is also a procedure that removes lip tissue to a design, so what has been taken away cannot easily be put back — we decide the shape and the amount carefully, after a thorough consultation. Results vary from person to person, and Dr.Tak tells you plainly what is achievable and what is not before going ahead.
